Kelly - Industrial Designer https://colinpkelly.com/NYC-Waste-and-Recycling-Bins DSNY— Waste and Recycling Bins In 2018, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) launched a design competition aimed at modernizing New York City’s iconic green wire mesh trash receptacles. The challenge was to devise solutions that addressed the complexities of urban waste management, all while balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal. From a global pool of entries, Group Project’s design was distinguished and selected. The newly designed bins have since been introduced to NYC streets, slated to replace close to 23,000 aging green wire mesh baskets that have been in use since the 1930s. Consisting of a metal stand, lid and recyclable plastic basket. The weight reduction inherent in this new design lightens their load by about 7,500 lbs per shift. The plastic material is also more compatible with the rolling and bashing action the workers use to remove the contents on the back of the truck. Kelly - Industrial Designer https://colinpkelly.com/Splash-Spots Zulu Alpha Kilo—Splash Spots For more than 100-years, when the temperature pushes past 90 degrees, New Yorkers across the city have turned to neighborhood fire hydrants in search of a little watery relief. However, the caps employed to spray the water have been rudimentary at best. Splash Spots is our new proposal for how New York City uncaps its hydrants during the hottest days of summer. Designed for maximum whimsy and water conservation, releasing approximately 50% less water than the standard hydrant spray cap, Splash Spots are an exciting and joyful build on the traditional caps the FDNY already uses. They were designed to create four unique water experiences and are crafted for safety, durability and scalability. Sophisticated testing is limited to large, expensive laboratories—far removed from the people that need it most. Visby Medical (formerly Click Diagnostics) was founded with the belief that accurate and affordable diagnostics should be available to anyone, anywhere. We built a first-of-its kind, palm sized, PCR platform designed to be used at the point-of-care (and eventually the home) that is capable of diagnosing nearly any infectious disease. When the pandemic hit, the Visby team quickly pivoted to develop the first point-of-care PCR test for COVID-19 to be authorized for use by the FDA. A 60-second game experience, which debuted in Times Square, the Venting Machine allows players to vent their anger however they see fit (scream, shake, punch, whatever!). The machine interprets the anger in real-time and calculates a prize to dispense. A massive LED matrix on the facade dynamically responds to punching and shaking, and sometimes it might grunt or spew smoke. Kelly - Industrial Designer https://colinpkelly.com/Emergency-Bridge-Ventilator NYC EDC &amp; New Lab— Emergency Bridge Ventilator In March of 2020, as cases of COVID-19 continued to climb in NYC, we were invited to join a burgeoning team of engineers and physicians tasked with rapidly designing and producing a bridge ventilator to meet the growing demand before NYC hospitals ran out. Based on an open-source design from MIT︎︎︎, we sought to design a device that was not only simple and intuitive to use, but also low-cost compared to traditional vents, easy to produce in a variety of manufacturing facilities and made out of as few parts as possible to avoid supply chain hurdles. In April of that year, the device was granted an Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA. Our initial insight was that some kids have trouble keeping their balance and are prone to falling backwards in standard booster seats. With a backrest, kids can comfortably sit closer to the table. In 2017 I was tapped to consult on a new high-profile project within Casper’s connected devices group. My focus was on the development of a temperature regulating mattress︎︎︎. A bed that dynamically adjusts in temperature and other parameters throughout the user’s sleep cycle.
